What are GCSEs?

GCSEs are the key qualifications taken in Years 10 and 11, graded 9–1. They help shape the next step into sixth form, apprenticeships or college, so getting the proper support early really matters.

Students often need a mix of solid subject knowledge and strong exam technique – especially for higher grades. LessonWise tutors support GCSE and IGCSE students across all boards and tiers, ensuring lessons are always matched to the correct specification.

What LessonWise tutoring achieves

LessonWise tutoring delivers clarity on tough topics through simple explanations and worked examples that stick, sharpens exam craft with timing strategies, command-word decoding, and mark-scheme precision, and drives stronger grades by systematically filling gaps and using targeted practice for steady improvement.

Our tutors focus on the things that make the biggest difference:

Students often feel more relaxed and in control after just a few sessions. Over time, they develop strong study habits, better recall, and a clearer understanding of what examiners are looking for through consistent routines and constructive feedback.

LessonWise students also develop independent study habits with smart revision methods and spaced practice for long-term retention.

Why choose LessonWise

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the questions we are often asked. If your question isn't listed, feel free to get in touch!

Do you cover my child’s exam board (AQA, Edexcel, OCR)?

Yes. We follow AQA, Edexcel and OCR specifications and use board-specific past papers, so everything feels familiar when exams come around.

What’s the difference between GCSE and IGCSE?

Both are Level 2 qualifications with similar standards. IGCSEs sometimes include different assessment types or international examples. We support students with either pathway.

When should we start tutoring?

Many families begin tutoring in Year 10 to help build confidence early. Year 11 starts are also very common, especially from January onwards when mocks and finals approach.

How long are lessons?

Most students do one 60-minute lesson per week per subject. Some add an extra weekly session closer to exams or when tackling larger gaps.

What happens in a typical session?

A quick check-in, focused teaching on priority topics, guided practice, and exam-style questions. Your child leaves knowing exactly what to work on next.

Do you set homework?

Yes – short tasks designed to reinforce what was covered in the lesson. Homework is reviewed during the next session.

Can you help with past papers and mocks?

Absolutely. This is a core part of what we do. Students receive feedback that is directly linked to the official mark schemes.

Is everything online?

Yes. Our online classroom includes a shared whiteboard, file sharing, worked solutions and easy scheduling – ideal for busy families.

Do you teach all abilities?

Yes – from securing passes to pushing for grades 7–9. Plans are personalised to pace, goals and confidence levels.

How much does a GCSE tutor cost?

Tutor prices at LessonWise depend on the tutor’s background. We offer three tiers to suit different needs and budgets.

Undergraduate tutors cost £30–£40 per hour; they’re studying the subject at university and have at least two years’ tutoring experience.

Professional tutors cost £40–£55 per hour; they’re graduates who are subject specialists with five or more years of private tutoring.

Qualified teachers cost £55–£70 per hour; they hold a PGCE or QTS and have several years of experience in both classroom and online tutoring.

The prices shown are the total you pay. The tutor’s hourly rate already includes LessonWise’s service fee, which covers matching, safeguarding, our online classroom, and progress tracking tools.
