What A-level Maths involves

A-level Maths (Years 12–13) is a two-year course assessed by exams at the end of Year 13 and graded A*–E. Students study a mix of pure mathematics, statistics, and mechanics. Most exam boards assess these through three exam papers of equal weight, taken at the end of the course.

A-level Maths tests secure algebraic fluency, clear reasoning, and multi-step problem-solving. Students are expected to connect ideas across topics and explain and justify their methods. They also understand how to apply what they know in unfamiliar and practical contexts.

What we cover in A-level Maths tutoring

Pure mathematics

A-level Maths builds on GCSE foundations and introduces more advanced topics across pure mathematics, statistics, and mechanics.

Statistics

Data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distributions (including binomial and normal), correlation and regression, and hypothesis testing.

Mechanics

Kinematics (motion in one and two dimensions), forces and Newton’s laws, resolving forces, moments, and simple mathematical modelling of real-world situations.

Aligned to your child's A-level course

We tailor every lesson to your child’s A-level Maths specification and exam board – typically AQA, Edexcel, or OCR – so their practice matches the papers they’ll sit.

Tutors focus on the right mix of pure mathematics, statistics, and mechanics, use board-specific past papers, and teach your child how marks are awarded. This helps them tackle longer, multi-step questions with clearer reasoning, stronger exam technique, and greater confidence.

What LessonWise tutoring achieves

LessonWise A-level Maths tutoring is designed to help your child move from simply getting through the work to feeling genuinely in control of a demanding course. Tutors concentrate on what will make the biggest difference – revisiting GCSE foundations and clarifying new A-level topics as well as strengthening exam technique and study habits.

Through clear explanations and regular practice with A-level–style questions, students learn to tackle multi-step problems in a structured way, link ideas across pure maths, statistics, mechanics, and more, and show their reasoning clearly to secure method marks. As their confidence and consistency grow, they see stronger grades, feel calmer about mocks and final exams, and are better prepared for the next steps they want to take after sixth form.

The step up from GCSE to A level

The move from GCSE to A-level Maths is a significant jump, even for students who achieved top grades at GCSE. Topics become more abstract, questions are longer and more demanding, and multiple ideas are often combined in a single problem.

A LessonWise A-level Maths tutor helps your child manage this transition. By revisiting key skills as needed, breaking down new content into clear steps, and regularly practising exam-style questions, tutoring transforms an overwhelming course into a structured and achievable journey.

A-level Maths tutoring FAQs

Below are some of the questions we are often asked. If your question isn't listed, feel free to get in touch!

What happens in a typical A-level Maths session?

In a typical A-level Maths session, your child works one-to-one with their tutor in our online classroom on the topics that matter most for their course and exams. A session usually includes a brief check-in, clear teaching on one or two priority areas, guided practice using A-level–style questions, and a short, focused homework task. Each lesson ends with simple next steps, so your child knows what they are improving and what to work on before the next session.

Do you have past A-level papers?

Yes. LessonWise tutors use A-level past papers and specimen questions from the main exam boards – typically AQA, Edexcel, and OCR – as part of your child’s tutoring. These are used in lessons and for short homework tasks, so your child can practise in the exact format they’ll see in their real exams and build confidence with multi-step A-level questions.

How can my child achieve an A* in A-level Maths?

Achieving an A* depends on your child's starting point, effort, and how they perform in the final exams. LessonWise is set up to give your child the best possible chance of reaching their top grade. If they're aiming for an A*, tutoring will focus on quickly closing gaps, then stretching them with higher-level questions and exam-style practice.

How is progress tracked?

Progress is tracked through a mix of lesson activity, scores, and clear communication, so you and your child can see what is improving over time. Through the LessonWise platform and BrightPath, you have visibility of lessons, topics covered, and overall progress, so you are not left guessing how your child is doing in A-level Maths.

When should we start A-level Maths tutoring?

It’s helpful to start A-level Maths tutoring early in Year 12, so your child can adjust smoothly to the step up from GCSE and build strong foundations as new topics are introduced. Some families start in Year 13, often from September or January, for focused support towards final exams. Short, intensive blocks can also work well around mocks and revision periods.

When should we start tutoring?

Starting tutoring in Year 10 helps build a strong foundation for success. Many students start in Year 11, especially from January, for focused exam preparation. Short intensive tutoring sessions are effective before mock exams and finals.
