What is the IB?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a globally recognised education framework taught in more than 160 countries. For some families, IB offers valuable continuity while living internationally or moving between countries. For others, it is an internationally recognised, intellectually demanding education that supports ambitious university pathways and globally minded futures.

IB asks students to work across subjects in a more interconnected way, develop independent thinking early, and perform through a mix of coursework, projects, oral work, and final exams. The challenge is rarely just the workload. It is navigating a curriculum, criterion-based assessment model and school context that feels very different from the systems parents and students know.

Why IB families need more than tutoring

  • Adjusting to the demands of studying more subjects than any other curriculum
  • Balancing core learning components and multiple assessment formats
  • Learning in English within a demanding academic framework
  • Staying on track for ambitious university pathways and international futures
  • Wanting clearer visibility than reports or end-of-term grades alone provide
  • Managing multiple tutors to ensure support is given across a range of subjects

BrightPath helps families see more than isolated results

At LessonWise, excellent teachers are at the heart of the learning experience, but BrightPath strengthens that by transforming tutoring into a fully managed and monitored journey.

Every lesson, task, assessment and engagement pattern contributes to your child’s evolving academic profile, making support more precise, patterns easier to spot, and progress more meaningful for families to follow.

In the first month, we build a stronger academic baseline so support starts with sharper understanding. From there, families gain clearer visibility, while we adapt support as needs evolve.

Support across the IB years

Primary Years Programme (PYP)

In the PYP years, families often look for support that strengthens literacy, numeracy, confidence and communication — especially when a child is learning in English, adjusting to an international school environment, or would benefit from more personalised stretch and guidance.

Typical support includes

Middle Years Programme (MYP)

In the MYP, support often becomes less about keeping up day to day and more about building stronger independent learning, handling broader subject demands, and making sense of criterion-based assessment. This is often the point where families want clearer structure before the jump into the Diploma years.

Typical support inlcudes

Diploma Programme (DP)

In the Diploma Programme, families often need support that goes beyond subject knowledge alone — helping students manage HL and SL demands, Internal Assessments, academic writing, exam preparation and the pressure of keeping everything moving at once.

International Baccalaureate tutoring FAQs

Below are some of the questions we are often asked about our International Baccalaureate tutoring. If your question isn't listed, feel free to get in touch!

How does matching work?

We match your child with a highly qualified educator based on subject needs, learning style, exam goals, and personality fit. You meet them in a structured Meet & Greet before lessons begin.

Do lessons still take place 1:1?

Yes. All Family Plans include weekly 1:1 online tutoring delivered by expert educators, with added oversight, safeguarding, and progress visibility.

Do you support families outside the UK?

Yes. Our online delivery model is well suited to families in international and overseas school settings.

Do you only help IB Diploma students?

No. We can support learners across the IB journey, but the kind of help we recommend depends on the child’s age, school context and needs.

How much does an IB tutor cost?

Instead of a pay-as-you-go system, LessonWise operates on a monthly Family Plan, which is customised to your child's specific needs and desired outcomes.
Our plans, which start from £240 per month, encompass a comprehensive service. This includes the tutor's hourly rate (we only work with qualified teachers or professional tutors, starting at £60 per hour), the recruitment and matching of the ideal tutor, enhanced safeguarding measures, access to our AI-augmented learning and progress platform, and fully managed services with academic oversight. We offer various tiers of tutoring to suit different requirements. These tiers depend on factors such as the tutor's qualifications and experience, and the demand for the subject.

Can we change tutors if needed?

Yes. If alignment isn’t optimal, we provide a swift replacement to maintain continuity.

How do we track progress?

Families use BrightPath — our AI-enhanced learning hub — to see progress, tasks, engagement, milestones, and predicted outcomes.

How long is a Family Plan?

Plans run for 6–24 months, depending on your needs. Longer commitments offer the best academic continuity.

Can you help with more than one subject?

Yes. Our Family Plans are designed to provide coordinated support across multiple subjects and for multiple children within the same plan, which is often needed, especially during the Diploma years.Explore the full Family Plan model, including plan tiers, BrightPath, lesson credits, and safeguarding on our Family Plans page.
